The American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry is a national psychoanalytic association founded in 1956 to provide an open forum for psychoanalysts to discuss relevant and responsible views of human behavior and to exchange ideas with psychiatric colleagues and other social and behavioral scientists.


Mission:

The American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry is an organization of psychiatrists interested in the application of psychodynamic psychotherapy in clinical practice and in understanding aspects of culture and art.

We are an affiliate organization of the APA and welcome interested colleagues to join us at our Annual meetings and share our publications.

The aims of The American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry are:

  1. To provide a forum for expression of ideas, concepts, and research in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychiatry;
  2. To constitute a forum for expression of and inquiry into the phenomena of individual motivation and social behavior;
  3. To encourage and support research in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychiatry;
  4. To advance the development of psychoanalysts and psychodynamic psychiatry in all other respects;
  5. To develop communication among psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, and their colleagues in other disciplines in science and in the humanities.

Membership:

Psychoanalytic Fellow

Physicians who have graduated from a recognized psychoanalytic institute or have had fully equivalent training may apply for membership in this category.

Psychiatric Fellow


Psychiatric Member

Psychiatrists with a demonstrated interest in psychoanalysis and dynamic psychotherapy may apply for admission as Psychiatric Members. Members in this category have full membership privileges.

Psychiatric Associate

This is a category of membership designed to broaden the Academy's exchange with other members of the psychiatric community. It is open to psychiatrists who have significant interest in psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalytic concepts. It is expected that psychiatrists in this category will become Psychiatric Members.

Scientific Associate

This is an invited category for distinguished physicians and other scientists and scholars who are active in psychiatric education or researchor in other branches of science.

Publications:

The Journal of The American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry

A biannual which publishes articles by members and other authors who have a significant contribution to make to the community of scholars and practitioners interested in a psychodynamic understanding of human behavior.

The Academy Forum

A quarterly which provides an opportunity for members to present their views on issues pertaining to practice, social conflict and change, literary criticism, the arts, book reviews and the state of the world. It announces Academy programs and subsequently reviews them.

Academy News

The newsletter of the Academy presents information about activities of members, committees and other matters of social and professional interest.

Books

Selected scientific proceedings of the Academy have been published in book form. These include:
  • Science and Psychoanalysis - A 21 volume series
  • Affect: Psychoanalytic Theory and Practice
  • Psychoanalysis and Religion: Overlapping Concerns
  • Psychoanalysis and Eating Disorders

Research:

The Research Committee of the Academy sponsors original clinical investigations in which members can participate. Research topics have included homsexuality and eating disorders.


Meetings:

The Academy has two national meetings each year for discussion of theoretical and clinical issues by members and other professionals.

The Annual Meeting is held immediately prior to the American Psychiatirc Associattion Meeting in the same city. It is a four-day meeting with paper sessions, panels, workshops, small group discussions, video sessions, award presentations and social events.

The Winter Meeting alternates between New York City and warm weather locations such as Southern California, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Arizona. The format is similar to that of the Annual Meeting.

The Academy sponsors symposia, seminars and workshops in various regions of the United States. They have focused on such issues as intimacy, stress, gender, psychosis and dreams.
